California IBank Secures $236 Million Bond for La Brea Tar Pits Master Plan
The California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank (IBank) has finalized a $236 million revenue bond to finance the initial phase of the La Brea Tar Pits and George C. Page Museum's extensive renovation. Governor Newsom announced this significant funding, which supports a master plan designed by Weiss/Manfredi. The museum complex, located on Los Angeles's Museum Row, closed on July 6 for a two-year period to commence work.
Phase one of the project includes expanding the Page Museum, reconfiguring berms for new outdoor gathering spaces, and upgrading signage, lighting, landscaping, and furniture across the 13-acre site. A key addition will be the Samuel Oschin Global Center for Ice Age Research, dedicated to studying ancient ecosystems. This phase is projected for completion by mid-2028. Subsequent phases will introduce new entrance pavilions, walkways, a parking lot, and a research building, extending construction activity over approximately seven years. This long-term development ensures continued investment in a prominent cultural landmark, signaling sustained construction opportunities in the area.
