The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously approved a record $466.6 million in funding for affordable housing initiatives, marking the largest allocation in the city's housing department history. This substantial investment, largely backed by Measure ULA (the 'mansion tax'), will be distributed to developers, nonprofits, and land trusts for both new construction and renovation projects.

The funding aims to stimulate development in a challenging market where many developers have paused multifamily projects due to profitability concerns. Council members emphasized accountability, with the spending plan requiring quarterly updates on fund allocation, project timelines, and any delays. Applications for the funds are open from October 13 to December 4, with recipients to be announced in February.

Of the total, $123 million is earmarked for multifamily affordable housing projects with 40 or more units, and $115 million will support projects seeking low-income housing tax credits. Additional funds are allocated for alternative construction models, stabilizing existing affordable housing, and acquiring/rehabilitating units. This funding round is expected to significantly impact the city's affordable housing landscape, providing crucial support for developers and addressing housing needs for working families, seniors, and people with disabilities.
