New Renderings Unveiled for $22 Million Watts Towers Art Center Expansion

A $22 million expansion project for the Watts Towers Art Center campus in Los Angeles has unveiled new renderings to the Board of Cultural Affairs Commissioners. The ambitious plan includes adding 30,000 square feet of new park space by converting a former railroad spur. This expanded green space will feature new walking paths, seating areas, art installations, enhanced lighting, drinking fountains, and bike racks.

Designed by Studio Zewde, the project has secured sufficient construction funding, notably a $10 million grant from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' Bezos Earth Fund. The City of Los Angeles is partnering with the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust to execute the development. Mayor Bass announced that groundbreaking is expected this year, with completion anticipated before the 2028 Summer Olympics.

This initiative represents the first major revitalization of the five-acre campus since 1961, following planning and outreach efforts that began in 2012. For developers and land-use professionals, this project highlights a significant public-private investment in urban green space and cultural infrastructure, demonstrating complex land conversion and community-focused development within a historic site.
