Permits Filed for SoMa Industrial Building Conversion to Performing Arts Center

Permits have been officially filed for the renovation of an industrial structure located at 262 7th Street in San Francisco's South of Market (SoMa) district. The project aims to convert the existing building into a vibrant performing arts center, contributing significantly to the SOMA Pilipinas cultural district.

The development is a collaborative effort involving the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC), established in 1995 to support multi-disciplinary arts reflecting the Asian Pacific Islander experience, and Kularts, founded in 1985 with a focus on contemporary and tribal Pilipino arts. Pyatok Architects is responsible for the design, which will largely preserve the exterior while extensively modifying the interior.

Plans for the facility include a new 133-seat theater featuring a double-height ceiling, a lobby entrance with a dedicated gallery space, a restroom, and a meeting room. While the ground floor and mezzanine will see significant changes for cultural facilities, the second floor is slated to retain office use with minor interior demolition. The 0.18-acre property is strategically located near Victoria Manalo Draves Park and the Civic Center BART Station. This adaptive reuse project will introduce new cultural infrastructure to a central urban area, supporting local arts organizations and community engagement.
