Compton College Student Housing Project Nears Completion with $83M Investment
The Compton College campus is seeing significant progress on an $83 million student housing complex, with completion anticipated in late Summer 2027. Located on a 2.8-acre site along Main Campus Drive, the development features interconnected three-story structures comprising 151 one- and two-bedroom suites. These units are designed to house up to 251 low-income and homeless students, addressing a critical need highlighted by a 2024 report indicating that a quarter of California community college students had experienced homelessness.
HPI Architecture is responsible for the design, which incorporates prefabricated modular units centered around a landscaped courtyard. The project's substantial funding, exceeding $80 million, comes from grants secured through California's AB 183. This initiative underscores a broader trend among local community colleges, including Long Beach Community College, to expand on-campus student housing options. For developers and lenders, this project exemplifies the growing state support for affordable student housing, particularly for vulnerable populations, and the increasing adoption of modular construction methods to expedite delivery.
