The City of Los Angeles has started construction on the Spring/Alameda Safety and Mobility Project following an official groundbreaking on September 11. Part of the municipal Capital Infrastructure Program, the street improvement spans approximately 1.2 miles across Alameda Street and North Spring Street, connecting the area between Union Station and Wilhardt Street adjacent to Los Angeles State Historic Park.

The project design requires removing one vehicular travel lane in each direction to make room for Class IV protected bicycle infrastructure. Initial work managed by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) will focus on accessibility features, including curb ramps and traffic signal upgrades, which are slated for completion in spring 2027.

Subsequent phases involving roadway resurfacing and restriping for the dedicated bike lanes are scheduled to commence in summer 2027 and conclude by fall 2027. Construction activity is centered around Alpine and Alameda Streets, running Mondays through Saturdays during daytime hours.

For real estate developers and commercial property owners, the road diet and transit access upgrades will reshape multimodal access and circulation around Chinatown and the Union Station perimeter.
