D.C. Mayor Bowser Pushes $550M Poplar Point Spa Project Amid Council Opposition
Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is making a final push to secure legislative approval for a $550 million thermal bathing retreat at Poplar Point, a significant 110-acre waterfront development site. The project, led by Therme Group US, is envisioned as a major anchor for a new mixed-use neighborhood, with 15 acres allocated for the spa, 25 for additional development, and 70 for parkland. This initiative is presented as a crucial economic driver, aiming to boost property and sales tax revenues and create jobs amidst the District's declining commercial real estate tax revenues and projected job losses.
However, the proposal faces considerable opposition and scrutiny. Presumptive D.C. Mayor Janeese Lewis George, who represents Ward 4, is questioning the prioritization of a spa over housing creation and has indicated she will delay hearings on the necessary legislation until next year. D.C. Council members, including At-Large Councilmember Christina Henderson, also express concerns about the rushed timeline for reviewing the project. The Bowser administration and Therme Group emphasize the urgency, stating that delays could jeopardize the project, which aims for a 2033 completion. Developers and investors should monitor the D.C. Council's legislative session, which concludes January 2, as the project's advancement hinges on immediate approval.
