Tarrant County Housing Office Moves to Terminate Contracts at Fort Worth Senior Living Community

LegalPolicyRegulation

The Tarrant County Housing Assistance Office (TCHAO) is proceeding with the termination of contracts for three military veteran tenants residing at Manor Independent Living in Fort Worth. This action follows the discovery of 14 severe, life-threatening deficiencies at the senior living community, which the property ownership failed to adequately address.

A comprehensive inspection conducted by TCHAO on September 29 identified issues such as missing smoke detectors, exposed wiring, broken fire doors, malfunctioning exit signs, a non-operational elevator, and a damaged front door. These conditions, deemed "life-threatening" under U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) guidelines, also included a hole in a third-floor electrical room ceiling. Additionally, over 40 missing ceiling tiles and 25 wall holes were noted.

Property owner Endeavor Group Real Estate (EGRE) was notified of the urgent need for corrective action. While EGRE acknowledged compliance issues, the TCHAO director, Wayne Pollard, stated that sufficient progress was not made. Contract terminations are rare for the office, typically reserved for severe cases. This decision highlights the challenges faced by voucher recipients, who often struggle to find new housing due to limited funds or credit issues. The move underscores the critical importance of maintaining safe and sanitary living conditions for vulnerable residents.
