Friedkin Group Establishes Significant Austin Office Amidst NHL Team Site Search
The Friedkin Group, which holds a six-month exclusive from the National Hockey League to explore creating a new team in Texas, is establishing a notable presence in Austin. The Houston-based conglomerate is opening a 7,000-square-foot office in the Music Lane mixed-use development on South Congress Avenue, with work by Gensler expected to conclude by late November. This move suggests a long-term interest in Austin by the group, led by billionaire Dan Friedkin.
The search for a new NHL team site pits Austin against Houston. Developing an 18,000-seat arena, complete with parking and an entertainment district, would necessitate 30 to 40 acres near major roadways or light-rail. While Houston offers a larger television market, Austin's appeal is highlighted by Friedkin's investment in the high-quality, sustainably designed Music Lane. The development, recognized for its eco-friendly features and designed by Lake Flato Architects, utilizes rainwater capture and sustainable materials. This strategic office opening indicates Austin's increasing importance as a potential location for major sports infrastructure and associated real estate development.
