Foundation work is progressing for a new seven-story affordable housing complex located at 2016 Ashby Avenue in South Berkeley. Developed by Community Housing Development Corporation, with Nibbi Brothers General Contractors handling construction, the project will introduce 50 new apartments. Lowney Architecture designed the building, which is expected to encompass approximately 55,380 square feet of housing.

The development prioritizes affordability, with 29 units designated for households earning between 20% and 60% of the area's median income (AMI). An additional 20 units are reserved for households earning less than 30% AMI, including 13 specifically for homeless seniors or those at risk of homelessness. One unit will also serve as housing for the on-site property manager. Situated directly behind the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church and across from the Ashby BART Station, the location offers excellent transit access, complementing the recently completed 2001 Ashby Avenue project. This development represents a significant step in addressing the critical need for deeply affordable housing in Berkeley, particularly for vulnerable populations in a transit-rich corridor.
