Foundation work is actively underway for the UC Berkeley Innovation Zone located at 2140 University Avenue in Downtown Berkeley, Alameda County. This significant development, spearheaded by UC Berkeley Capital Strategies, is designed to create a cutting-edge hub for research and innovation.

The project is divided into two phases. The first phase, the five-story Bakar Labs for Energy & Materials, is currently further along in construction. Designed by Gensler, this facility will support advancements in clean energy, advanced manufacturing technology, and energy-efficient transportation, featuring wet laboratories, event spaces, and community rooms.

Following this, the second phase will introduce the six-story Innovation Genomics Institute and additional Bakar Labs. Weiss / Manfredi Architects is the lead design architect, with DGA serving as the executive architect. This complex is dedicated to promoting research in genome editing technology for applications in human therapeutics and agricultural engineering. Turner Construction is the general contractor for the entire project. Demolition of previous structures concluded in Fall 2025, with phase one expected to finish in 2028 and phase two in 2029. This development represents a substantial investment in scientific infrastructure, poised to foster significant breakthroughs and economic growth in the region.
