Kansas City Proposal Explores Vertical Data Center Model for Urban Density
A new development proposal in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, seeks to introduce a 20-story vertical data center, challenging the conventional suburban sprawl model for such facilities. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) for developer Revitalization Unlimited, the project would occupy a compact 0.23-acre urban parcel.
This vertical approach prioritizes proximity to users and dense, carrier-rich network infrastructure, which is crucial for latency-sensitive applications like inference workloads. Steve Austin, CEO of Revitalization Unlimited, emphasized that while not every data center belongs downtown, this specific project justifies the construction premium due to its strategic location and network advantages. The development remains subject to city approval, with a related ordinance currently on hold. This model highlights a trade-off between increased urban construction costs and the benefits of superior network diversity and reduced latency, offering a different perspective for future data center site selection.
