San Antonio City Council Expands Opposition to Federal Immigration Leases and Detention Facility
The San Antonio City Council recently voted to expand its opposition to federal immigration operations within the city, targeting both a planned detention facility and new office leases. The council's resolution directs city officials to explore legal and administrative remedies against a proposed 640,000-square-foot warehouse conversion on the East Side, intended to house up to 1,500 people. This action follows a federal lawsuit filed by San Antonio against the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), alleging a lack of required environmental review for the detention center.
Furthermore, the resolution now includes a challenge to two 15-year federal leases totaling $51 million for 75,000 square feet of office space at WatersEdge at Brooks. These offices are designated for immigration-related legal operations. Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones argued that these leases, located less than 10 miles from the proposed detention facility, could solidify a permanent federal immigration enforcement presence, impacting economic development and increasing the federal government's resolve to maintain the detention center. The city manager and attorney are tasked with supporting independent assessments of the facility's utility and infrastructure effects, and coordinating with outside groups. This move signifies a proactive stance by the city to address the broader implications of federal immigration infrastructure on local communities and development.
