Digital Realty to Develop Subsea Cable Landing Station at El Segundo Data Center
Digital Realty has announced plans to construct a cable landing station (CLS) directly within its LAX12 data center located in El Segundo, California. This project, a partnership with subsea infrastructure specialist Assured Communications, is designed to create a new entry point for international subsea cable capacity into the Los Angeles region.
The CLS will facilitate routes between Asia-Pacific and North America, offering a more direct connection from subsea systems to terrestrial networks. The facility is anticipated to begin supporting cable operations by 2028. This move reflects an industry trend where hyperscale cloud and AI providers increasingly seek to land cables directly into established data centers rather than standalone stations.
According to Craig Waldrop of Digital Realty, this infrastructure is crucial for the broader connectivity ecosystem, ensuring that international capacity efficiently links with data centers, networks, and cloud providers. The integrated, turnkey solution is expected to simplify the landing and powering of subsea cable systems, enhancing the region's digital infrastructure.
