Digital Realty is developing a new cable landing station (CLS) within its LAX12 data center in El Segundo, California. Announced on September 22 in partnership with Assured Communications, this project aims to create a direct on-ramp for subsea cable capacity into the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The CLS is designed to serve routes between Asia-Pacific and North America, with operations expected to begin in 2028.

This strategic placement of the CLS inside an existing data center reflects a growing trend where hyperscale cloud and AI providers integrate subsea cable terminations directly into established interconnection environments. Craig Waldrop, VP of Strategy at Digital Realty, stated this integration enhances international capacity by efficiently connecting it to data centers, networks, and cloud providers. Assured Communications, a subsea infrastructure specialist, is supporting the design and construction.

The development represents a significant infrastructure investment, reinforcing Los Angeles's role as a critical hub for global digital connectivity. For real estate developers and investors, it underscores the expanding demand for specialized data center facilities, influencing future property development and site selection strategies.
