Digital Realty to Develop Subsea Cable Landing Station at El Segundo Data Center
Digital Realty announced plans to construct a new cable landing station (CLS) within its LAX12 data center located in El Segundo, California. This initiative, unveiled on September 22nd in collaboration with Assured Communications, aims to establish a direct conduit for subsea cable capacity into the broader Los Angeles metropolitan area. The CLS is specifically designed to facilitate routes between Asia-Pacific and North America, with operations anticipated to commence in 2028.
This project addresses the growing demand from hyperscale cloud and AI providers who increasingly seek to integrate subsea cables directly into data centers rather than relying on standalone landing stations. According to Craig Waldrop, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at Digital Realty, efficient connectivity between international subsea capacity and terrestrial data centers, networks, and cloud providers is paramount. The LAX12 CLS will offer a turnkey solution for subsea cable operators, simplifying the landing and powering of their systems. This development streamlines the connection of global subsea networks to terrestrial data infrastructure, crucial for high-demand data services and international data flow.
