Digital Realty is developing a new cable landing station (CLS) within its LAX12 data center located in El Segundo, California. Announced on September 22 in collaboration with Assured Communications, this project aims to establish a direct conduit for subsea cable capacity into the Los Angeles metropolitan area's terrestrial network infrastructure. The CLS is specifically engineered to facilitate data transmission routes between Asia-Pacific and North America, with operations slated to commence in 2028.

This initiative provides subsea cable operators with a comprehensive, turnkey solution for both landing and powering their systems directly within an existing data center and interconnection hub. The move aligns with an evolving industry trend where major cloud and AI providers are increasingly integrating cable terminations directly into data centers, bypassing traditional standalone landing stations. Craig Waldrop, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at Digital Realty, highlighted the critical importance of efficiently connecting international subsea capacity to data centers, networks, and cloud services. Assured Communications is leveraging its specialized experience in subsea infrastructure for the design and construction phases. For real estate developers and investors, this project underscores the growing demand for highly integrated data center and connectivity assets, emphasizing the strategic value of locations capable of supporting global digital infrastructure.
