Sony Pictures and Alamo Drafthouse to Revive Historic Cinerama Dome in Hollywood
Sony Pictures Entertainment and its subsidiary Alamo Drafthouse Cinema are set to revive the Cinerama Dome, a landmark Hollywood movie theater, which has been closed since the pandemic's onset six years ago. The plan involves extensive renovations to the historic property, with work scheduled to commence next month and conclude in 2028. The iconic "Cinerama" signage, curved screens, and original concessions will be preserved, maintaining the theater's unique character.
In addition to the Dome, the adjoining 14-screen complex, previously an ArcLight, will reopen as an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. This will introduce the chain's distinctive events and programming to the location. Ravi Ahuja, chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment, emphasized the Cinerama Dome's unparalleled cultural significance to Los Angeles and the film industry.
Built in 1963 at 6360 Sunset Boulevard, the Cinerama Dome is renowned as the only concrete geodesic dome globally. The structure comprises 316 hexagonal and pentagonal shapes. The revival follows earlier approvals for alcoholic beverage sales within the complex, signaling renewed activity for the property. This project mirrors Alamo Drafthouse's successful restoration of San Francisco's New Mission Theater in 2015, highlighting a commitment to revitalizing historic cinematic venues. For developers and property owners, this project demonstrates the potential for adaptive reuse and the value of preserving cultural landmarks in urban centers.
