New affordable housing has opened at 1178 Sonora Court in Sunnyvale, in Santa Clara County. The seven-story building, called Ira D. Hall Square, adds 176 apartments across from the Lawrence Caltrain Station.

Of the apartments, 174 are reserved for households earning between 30% and 70% of the area median income, and two are for on-site property managers. Forty-five affordable units are designated for homeless individuals referred through the county's Coordinated Entry system. Unit types range from studios to three-bedroom homes, and the site includes parking for 134 vehicles. The structure stands roughly 75 feet tall.

MidPen Housing sponsored the project. Studio T Square designed the building, and Cahill Contractors served as general contractor. Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein praised the developer's partnership with the city, noting that MidPen has now completed 12 affordable developments in Sunnyvale with more than 1,000 units. MidPen's president and CEO, Matthew O. Franklin, said the project honors the legacy of founding CEO Ira D. Hall.

For developers and lenders, the project shows a transit-adjacent affordable model that pairs deep-income targeting with supportive housing set-asides.
