Long Beach Committee Reviews Plans for 55 Affordable Units at 1850 Atlantic Avenue
A city-owned parcel at 1850-1862 Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach is advancing plans for a significant affordable housing development. The Site Plan Review Committee recently reviewed proposals for a six-story, approximately 54,000-square-foot building that will feature 55 residential units. Of these, 54 apartments are designated as affordable housing, exclusively for very low- and extremely low-income households, with one unit reserved for a market-rate manager.
This new project repurposes a site that previously faced redevelopment challenges. In 2024, Centro CHA withdrew from plans to build a workforce development center due to escalating costs. Following a fire that damaged the existing structure, Long Beach officials decided to demolish it in 2025, clearing the way for the current housing initiative. The development will also include community benefit space and limited parking. Located near Pacific Coast Highway, the site is strategically positioned close to other affordable housing resources, underscoring Long Beach's efforts to expand its affordable housing stock. This initiative demonstrates how municipalities can leverage public land to create much-needed housing solutions for vulnerable populations.
