NC State University to Study Adoption of Advanced Construction Safety Helmets
North Carolina State University has received a grant from the Job-Site Safety Institute (JSI) to research the adoption of upgraded Type II safety helmets in construction. This initiative aims to understand the practicalities of replacing standard Type I hard hats with more advanced helmets, which offer superior protection against top and side impacts. A pilot program involving Maryland-based Comer Construction will evaluate real-world implementation.
Previous NC State research found many workers unaware of Type I vs. Type II headwear distinctions. Type II helmets, with chin straps, mitigate traumatic brain injuries—responsible for approximately 200 U.S. construction deaths annually. Their higher cost is a significant barrier, often exceeding $100 compared to $15 for traditional hard hats.
Despite the cost, contractors like Comer Construction's president Susie Comer view the investment as worthwhile. The JSI, founded by Builders Mutual Insurance, assists smaller firms. This study aims to provide an industry example for transitioning to Type II helmets, potentially bridging the adoption gap, especially in residential construction where usage lags commercial projects. The findings could inform broader safety policies and purchasing decisions for developers and contractors.
