University of Tennessee Begins Construction on $350 Million Memphis Health Sciences Building
The University of Tennessee has commenced construction on its new $350 million College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building, located on its Memphis campus. This 300,000-square-foot facility is slated to become the first dedicated home for the College of Medicine, playing a critical role in training future physicians. General contractor Flintco is overseeing the construction, collaborating with design firm HOK and architect brg3s.
The project is primarily funded by a $311 million appropriation from the Tennessee General Assembly, representing the largest capital investment by the state legislature in a higher education institution in Tennessee's history. This funding, approved in April, underscores the state's strategic effort to mitigate its physician shortage; Tennessee currently has approximately 13% fewer physicians per capita than the national average.
Expected to be substantially completed by 2029 and fully occupied by 2030, the building will feature flexible classrooms, advanced simulation spaces, and technology-enabled areas to connect educators and students statewide. This development is a significant step in bolstering medical education infrastructure and workforce development within Tennessee.
