Miami's newly established independent Office of the Inspector General (OIG), under the leadership of Antonio Diaz, has begun its work, addressing 19 matters in its initial months. Diaz, who was sworn in last November, recently updated the city commission on September 24 regarding the office's early oversight activities and progress in establishing its full operations. The OIG is actively building its team, having filled 11 of its projected 25 positions, and is working towards achieving state accreditation by 2027, demonstrating a commitment to robust municipal oversight.

The creation of this autonomous watchdog agency was a direct result of a significant public mandate. In August 2024, nearly 80% of Miami voters approved a referendum to replace the city's former Independent Auditor General with this more independent and empowered body. For developers, architects, and other real estate professionals, the presence of an active Inspector General's office signifies an increased emphasis on transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct within city government processes. This oversight can influence everything from permitting and zoning approvals to public contracting and regulatory compliance, ensuring a more scrutinized environment for urban development projects. The office's ongoing development underscores a commitment to ethical governance within Miami's municipal operations, which can foster greater public trust in development initiatives.
